The CHRISTUS Heritage:
In 1999, two historic Catholic charities became one, forming CHRISTUS Health and creating a unique purpose in the modern health care market — to take better care of people. Ranked among the top 10 Catholic health systems in the United States by size, the CHRISTUS Health system includes more than 40 hospitals and facilities in six American states and Mexico, with assets of more than $4.1 billion.
The Mission:
Today, we at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital have a new purpose — a mission to end diabetes.
However, no one can do this alone, and so we invited everyone to work with us on this special mission. CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital held an international contest and invited inventors, entrepreneurs, and researchers from around the world to participate. The rules were simple: Develop and submit a proposal for a program that will aid in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in a rural area such as central Louisiana.
The competition was open for eighteen months and was promoted through social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as diabetic websites and online medical and business journals. “In the medical field we tend to think of using the resources within our community,” says Stephen F. Wright, President and CEO of CHRISTUS Health regions in Louisiana, “but why can’t we take a problem and say to the world, ‘help us solve this problem?’ We wanted to see if there were people out there, not necessarily medical professionals that would come up with innovative approaches.”
First Place was awarded to Button Systems Incorporated, Vermont – Peter Schickler, CEO. Button Systems’ chronic disease management experience relies upon a registry with key patient data elements that, when collected, form the basis of the follow-up and analytical reporting. The reports help providers identify and intervene with patients at the point-of-care who are most likely to develop costly, debilitating, diabetes-related complications.
Since the award, Button Systems staff has worked with our staff to implement two new web-based applications – a chronic disease registry, and a closed social network for diabetics.

- CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital
In the early 1900s, Lake Charles, La., was the center of a growing lumber industry, yet it had no
hospitals. Seeing the need for a quality medical facility, John Greene Martin, M.D., president of the
local medical society, and Rev. Hubert Cramers, rector of Immaculate Conception Church, set about
to provide for one. They approached the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Galveston,
Texas, for help in setting up a hospital in Lake Charles like the one the sisters had established
in Galveston. When the hospital was finished, Dr. Martin, a native of Ireland, insisted that it be
named after St. Patrick, the patron saint of his homeland.
